Sean:first you need to find your family.Post names, birth/marriage/death dates that you have, birth/marriage/death places that you have. From there, someone will probably help you by doing a quick census search and give you some particulars. Then, you need to go the states/counties where they were born. Also posting to family surname boards and locality boards will help.
As to DNA:DNA will only give you a general overview of your genetic admixture:% of European, Afrian, Middle Eastern, American Indian...I'm not exactly sure how they do that, but I do know there are a couple of different tests and that none, at this point, will tell you tribe or nation.I had one done on my mom because over and over again they SAY there's AI in her family from a couple of different maternal lines, but no one will admit to it. So I had a test done on her and !voila! she did have some small percentage of American Indian DNA.All that told us isthat a couple of someones, somewhere back there, were Amaerican Indian.I have a couple of suspects but until other family members (who don't want to be any admixture of AI...) decide to get a dna test done, we won't be able to narrow it down. And so it goes:you might find some AI dna, but you may not ever find out who brought it in.It becomes a historical artifact of your personal genealogy.Which is not a bad thing....
good luck
