In what I was told with some searching their heritage.
That the determination to cause all Indians to disappear, was causing many Indians to disappear on paper. They found some census listing a person as Indian, than in another census the same person was listed as white.
With the mistaken Idea that ALL full blooded Indians have a certain look, some taking the census may have marked them down white in the spring, and in the fall with the deep tan listed them as Indian, or put in the listing as "all others".
Depending on the STATE or the one takeing the census.
If they were in Missouri there was a law "no Indians allowed to walk through or linger about"That law was NOT removed till the mid-1970,s
There was many Indians in Missouri, they had to keep their mouth shut even to their children, but had ways to keep going who they were.
My brother retired from law-enforcement, that is how I know.
In searching one needs to search in many states, because some kept moving around if they had a hard time passing as white, many had familys type farms, taking care of only their family, others were trapers, some staying in the law, for a need to know what was what.
Some was found to where it was very plain that B had been marked over an I.
When in searching it was ask what did " All Others" mean and was told that was where they put Indians.
Sometimes people get lucky and find their Indianback ground, Those who had to hide who they were, found a way to past it down in some way, was more blessed to know who they were. One lady after getting old, for some reason looked behind an old family picture, and in the back of the picture, was proof she was Blackfoot Indian.
So I hope you who are searching do not allow some one here to put you down for searching your Indian heritage. It is healing to know for sure your heritage, and be ACCEPTED by your own linage, many will still try to put you down in some way, may even call you a Wantabe. Keep in mind you cannotbe a wantabe for what you already are. Just let any put downs flow into nothingness, and fly away with the wind.
You are who you are, no one can take that away from you.
May yoube blessed in your search for who every you find in your path, HONOR and love them.
