L.E.Mathews, I am also from the Mathews lineage from Scioto, Ohio..My gr gr great grandfather was Edwin Mathews..His parents were from the east as your Mathews..I am trying to make connections with other Mathews in search i might find his family..As you know the U.S. Goverment back then would not allow the Native Americans to put their selves down as Indians and gave the white men's names.This went ton until early 1900 when it became a new law that the Native Americans could consider themselves on census..Back then if they put themselves down as Native American they would be shipped off..I am 3/4 chippewa and cree and a little cherokee to boot..This comes down our french lineage...
