Many thanks for your efforts Dennis. John Ahern was unusual amoung the 'characters' of the time - most were loners. When Ahern was first convicted in 1856 he was living on his cattle station with his wife and 7 children. Nothing was heard of John Ahern after 1869 following his release from Pentridge gaol in Victoria. His so-called associates, Harry Power (mentor of the Australian outlaw Ned Kelly) and Thomas Toke are known to have died in Victoria.
Earlier this year when perusing the BDM index records (now on-line) of the State of Queensland I noticed the correct parent names for a John Ahern who died in 1887 at a Benevolent Home near Brisbane. Examination of their Admission Records confirmed that this was my man and a 50 year search was over.I knew that some of his sons were involved in managing cattle stations in Outback Queensland and this in enabled he to locate the properties in Outback Queensland where John Ahern worked.
I have still not been able to find any incident in New South Wales which might account for Michael Ahern adopting the name John. Ian O'N
