Michael ("John") Ahern, Mitta Mitta Australia

My ggrandfather Michael Ahern (parents Michael Ahern and Mary Donovan) was born in the townland of Whiterock nr Midleton Cork in 1820 and married Maria Jordan at Cloyne in 1840, the year they sailed for and arrived in Sydney Australia. After several years in New South Wales the family moved via the Monaro to the Mitta Mitta in the high country of Victoria. He ran cattle on his Mitta Mitta No2 station. They were turbulent times with the discovery of gold in the area and cattle duffing and horse stealing were rife. Strangely Michael was always known as John and became rather infamous as "Mitta Mitta Jack". John was the name of his next brother in Ireland. Can anyone throw any light on the reason for the name change? I can trace Mitta Mitta Jack's movements till 1863 after which there appears to be no trace.
