James AHearn (Ahearn) - Troy, NY 1890

Searching for information on James Ahearn, his sister Mary Ahearn and their uncle, Patrick Dee (married to Catherine Dee)and their uncle, James Dee (married to another Mary Ahearn).

I have been searching from the "Dee" side for many years and have not had success so thought I would try to "back" into the Dee family through the Ahearn side.

I have a letter written by James AHearn (how he signed his letter) to James Dee in Hopewell, Missouri. The letter is dated July 2, 1890 and in the letter, James says he is unmarried and living with his sister, Mary Ahearn (also unmarried). James Ahearn's letter states that he is the foreman of The Troy Nickel Works. The return address on the letter is 703 River Street, Troy, NY.

James Ahearn was the nephew of James Dee and Mary (Ahearn) Dee. James Dee had a brother, Patrick Dee, who was married to Catherine (?) Dee. Patrick and Catherine had several children: Delia Dee (who died in a convent), Johanna, Josephine and Thomas. I have been able to locate Patrick and family on the 1880 census for Troy, NY but nothing since.

James Dee (my great, great grandfather) and Mary (Ahearn) Dee had one son, Thomas Dee. Thomas was born in Troy, NY in 1854. Sometime there after, James Dee and family moved to Hopewell, Missouri.

According to my grandfather, James & Patrick Dee's father was also named Thomas and was married to ?? Morrisey/Morrisee. The family was originally from County Cork, Ireland. I believe that only James and Patrick immigrated to the U.S.

I have been unable to find where or when the Dee brothers came into the U.S. I am hoping that possibly I can connect with descendants of James Ahearn or his sister Mary. The repeated naming patterns doesn't help either! Too many "James" and "Mary"...

In any event, below is a transcription of James Ahearn's letter to James Dee. If anyone can shed any light on any of these individuals, I would love to hear from you.

LETTER FROM JAMES AHEARN TO JAMES DEE DATED 7/2/1890:

"Troy, NY July 2, 1890

Dear Uncle,

I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. I supposed that you and my Anty was dead. I am well at present and hope you and Aunt is the same.

My sister and myself is living together as we are not married yet. Mary is working in a laundry and I am foreman of the Troy Nickel Works.

Your brother Patrick is not in Troy. He is in Newheven, Ct. He left Troy about 5 years ago. His daughter Delia is dead. She died in a convent where she went to be a sister. He has hard luck (?) whit to my (?)as he drinks hard. I will not say no more in this as you may not get it all right but in my next I will tell you all I know.

Write as soon as you received this.

Direct your letter to James AHearn 703 River St, Troy NY"

So... by subtracting 5 years from the date of the letter, it appears that Patrick left Troy around 1885. I have no idea if his family went with him. With so very little information, and SO many Patrick Dee on the census, it is almost impossible to deduce with certainty if I have the right one.

I am hoping that by sharing this letter, there may be others who may have information on James AHearn and his sister, Mary which will allow me to work backwards.

Thanks for reading this very lengthy post.

Pam Williams
