[sent May 28th] Today is the 28th of May. On this date in 1859, Mary O'Hearn of Boston, Massachsuetts placed an advertisement in The Pilot newspaper searching for her husband, Michael O'Hearn of Kinsale, Co. Cork, who was last heard from working on the railroad in Illinois 15 months previous. See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahmiss.htm for an index of Ahern adverts in The Pilot. Today is also Memorial Day in the United States. This was originally known as Decoration Day and it was set aside for placing flowers on the graves of those men who had served the Union cause in the Civil War. It has since become a day of remembrance not only of those who died in the service of their country, but also for family members who have passed before. In Ireland it is still customary to print Memorial notices in the local paper on the anniversary of someone's death. That is how I stumbled upon the tale of Maurice Christopher Ahern of Monard, Co. Cork, whose one-year anniversary notice said "shot on October 5th, 1921". You can find out how he came to be killed in the updates to the Aherns in the News Pages. In current news, it appears that Bertie Ahern will be the first Taoiseach ever to serve a third term as prime minister of the Irish Republic. Be sure to read the 1989 news item mentioned below to see how he got where he is. See http://ieplists.com/?ID1690 for complete details of the recent elections in Ireland. The obituary page has now passed the 3,350 mark. The earliest new obituary is for Michael Ahern, senior, of Moore St., Cork City, Ireland, 14 January 1905. The most recent new obituary is for Paul L. Ahern of Lake Forest, Illinois, 22 and 23 May 2007.
