Am not related but may be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info but additional newspaper extracts may be found at URL: <http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php> Vern D ////////////////////////////////// Transcribed by Dee Sardoch; <deesar@frontiernet.net> ////////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Independent Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA ************************* >>Tuesday, 19 Sept 1871<< DESTRUCTIVE FIRE and EXPLOSION -- A Hamilton (Nev.) dispatch of the 17th says: Pioche City was almost entirely destroyed by fire on the night of Sept. 15th. The 'Ely Record' publishes an extra giving the following: Last night, between 11 and 12 o'clock, a destructive fire broke out in the rear of LAGNE's restaurant, which destroyed nearly all of Pioche. It is impossible in this hastily gotten up report to give full particulars, but it is safe to estimate the loss at between $200,000 and $300,000, on which there is scarcely a dollar's worth of insurance. The fire was as nothing compared with the loss of killed and wounded which followed in the wake of the ravages of the fire-fiend. Felsenthal & Co. had 300 kegs of powder in what was supposed to have been a fireproof cellar, and about 2 o'clock the whole mass exploded, killing 6 and wounding 31. Several lesser magazines in the rear of the stores exploded at a late hour. It is impossible to describe the terror and consternation which prevailed during and after the explosion. Men, women and children rushed about in all directions seeking lost relatives and friends. Houses were thrown down and shattered, and the cries of the wounded and of the dying were pitiful in the extreme. The following is a list of the wounded as obtained up to 8 o'clock this morning: H.D. BEENE John CULLEN Harvey RICE J. WATERS Bartholomew NOONAN John FARLEY Robert WATTS Archy MULHERN John DAIKEN Charley WILLIAMS Miler QUELLAN Wm. RYAN H.G. TAHLER R. SHANNON D. NOONAN D. NAGLE John DAUGHERTY Miss GARY Mrs. HANERHAN French Charley Mike FAY Rose STEIN A. RANEY Fred HASKIN Wm. STEVENS Phil. RICHARDS Wm. H. KING Thomas KENDALL Chris SCHULTZ W.S. COTTON Daniel SULLIVAN All of whom were either injured by falling rocks or jarred by the concussion or burned. Many of the wounded will die. There are more injured, but we are unable at present to give particulars. The following persons were killed: Jeremiah KIRBY Jas. AGNEW Ira SAND Wm. DODDS Mike SHEEHAN And 1 other burned so that he cannot be recognized. Notify Administrator about this message?
