MRS EVELINE WILBER--
wife of the late Havens Wilber, died at 5:20 P.M. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 1900, of cancer, at her home on Fremont St.She had been ill for several weeks, hence her death was not unexpected.
Mrs. Wilber was born at Canajoharie, Montgomery county, New York, Oct. 23, 1820, hence was 79 years, 9 months, and 12 days old.She was married to Havens Wilber at Watertown, N.Y. Feb. 4, 1845, and came to Watertown [WI] in 1854, where she resided up to the time of her death.
Four sons and one daughter survive her, and are as follows: G.J. Wilber, Chicago; C.H. Wilber, Milwaukee; B.B. Wilber and C.S. Wilber, Madison; Mary E. Wilber, Watertown, Wisconsin.
Mrs. Wilber's funeral took place Monday afternoon from the M.E. church, Rev. A.M. Bullock, officiating.Her remains were laid peacefully to rest in Oak Hill cemetery, her four sons acting as pall bearers.
Mrs. Wilber's death is sincerely regretted in Watertown, for though not mingling much in society for years past, she had a large acquaintence here who held her in highest esteem.The Wilber family has been a very prominent one in Watertown for nearly a half century, and at the passing from earth of the guiding star of the family, all our citizens bow their heads in sadness and join with bereaved sons and daughter in mourning for the dead one.
Mrs. Wilber had a retiring disposition and devoted her every energy to the care and comfort of her family, who in turn reflected their mother's goodness as they mingle with their fellow citizens.Her's was a disposition of mildness and a truly Christian one, being ever mindful of her duty to her God and at the same time to her family, neighbors and friends, hence in passing from earth Mrs. Wilber leaves behind fond recollections of her well spent life that willbe forever sweetly cherished by all who knew her.
The following beautiful lines on her death were penned by one of her four sons:
She bid us a fond "good night"
The night before she died;
On the following day
She passed peacefully away
Like a tired child going to sleep.
Now, when our footsteps turn
To our childhood's home,
As they were wont to do,
The loved form no more
Will meet us at the door;
We will only find there her vacant chair
With her bible on the table
May the heavenly gates be ajar for us,
And mother meet us at the door of heaven.
