Hancock Co. OH. was the place of birth.
James Boyd is listed with E.C. Denning in the 1850 Blanchard, Hancock Co. OH census. And even though there aren't individual listings in the 1840 census James is with the Dunnings. He's the only child in any census with the Dennings/Dunnings. They didn't have any of their own.
Of the brothers Joseph living with the Wards and James living with the Denning/Dunnings, it's James that I'm interested in the most.
There is no absolute proof that James Boyd is the son of John Boyd and Nancy Spence. However there is circumstantial evidence for it. In the 1830 for Hancock Co. OH. John Boyd is the only Boyd listed. I can find no other Boyds in the area between 1830 and 1840. There are no Boyds in Hancock Co. OH in the 1840 Census. County histories record that Nancy Spence died about 1831. James was born 31 Jan 1832. That's about 1831. John was became desolate and left the county.
My theory is that Nancy died when James was born and John blamed James for her death. It's possible the Joseph's birth weakened Nancy and Jame's birth finished her off. Either way Joseph and James were given to other families when John left the county. Both would have been nursing at the time and that could be the reason John left them behind.
The Dunning/Dennings don't appear to be related to the Boyds in any way. Mrs. Denning was born in the wrong place to be a sister of either John Boyd or Nancy Spence.
According to James Boyd's daughter's death certificate James was born in Findlay, Hancock Co. OH. There is no place of birth listed on Jame's death certificate except OH.
I'm hoping there would have been some kind of written record acknowledging James Boyd as the son of John Boyd and Nancy Spence. Maybe through guardianship or adoption papers or as another poster suggested church records. Hancock Co. OH didn't have birth records at the county level at that time period.
