Margaret Funck Gibbs, age 98, of Huron, died Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her memorial service will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 31st at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Channell officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Friday, October 30th at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Huron or the Huron Regional Medical Center Foundation. Margaret Gibbs was born June 8, 1911, at Pierre, South Dakota, to James and Amy (Shaw) Wolfkiel. She grew up in Pierre and graduated from Pierre High School in 1929. Margaret attended Huron College for two years.
She married Ernest Funck in Huron on October 2, 1932. They lived in Huron. Margaret was employed at Northwestern Bank in Huron from 1956 – 1976, where she had the distinction of being the first female operations officer at the Huron bank.
Her husband Ernest died in 1970. She married Darrell Gibbs on August 19, 1971, at Tacoma, Washington.
Margaret was very active in the Huron community. She was a member of the National Association of Bank Women and had served as both local and state chairman of the organization. When her children were young, she was a den mother for Boy Scouts and also served as treasurer of the Pheasant Council of Boy Scouts and PTA president at Lincoln School.
She was involved in the Huron Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors for many years and served as chairman of the Huron City Civil Service Board. Margaret was also an active volunteer at Huron Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the hospital auxiliary and was a hospice volunteer. She served on many boards in the community including the United Way, RSVP, and Our Home, Inc., on which she served as treasurer, and Lake Byron Association, which she chaired. She was also a member of the board of directors of the YWCA, and had served as activity chairman. The YWCA honored her with the Christian Women’s Award in 1979.
She was active in Business and Professional Women, having served as local and state president and was chosen Woman of the Year in 1976. Margaret was a charter member of La Sertoma Club and had served as president, district governor, and was selected as Woman of the Year in 1978.
Margaret had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church since June 1936, where she had served as both a deacon and an elder, clerk of the session, chairman of the church centennial committee and the Sunday school treasurer. She also was active in the Women’s Association and the Youth Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ernest and her second husband, Darrell on June 10, 1984; her son, Jim; her granddaughter, Tonya; her sister, Edith Vaverka; and two step-brothers, Arlan Wiles and Raymond Wiles.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Anne Funck Reynolds of St. Paul, Minnesota; her son, David Funck of Huron; her only nephew, Mike (Mary Jo) Vaverka of Lincoln, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Stacy Reynolds Ondov (Thomas), Chris Reynolds, Laura Funck Auckland, Victor Funck, Tracy Funck, and Paul Funck; seven great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Al Gibbs of Jacksonville, Florida, and Beverly (Forey) Hurd of Marble Falls, Texas; eight step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grand-children.
