I'm sure that adoption proceedings, places of housing info, etc may be very different from things in the states, and I'd think you need to do some 'homework' about the providence and town where the adoption took place.this URL is a site for all the various Canadian lists, so read through them to see if there are any for the area you're interested in.

I did a google to see what I could find on Canadian adoption, and found this statement ". The current status of records access for adult adoptees in Canada is varied. Some provinces offer very little information, some have mutual disclosure registries, some have active searches available, while still others give adult adoptees access to their information, subject to potential vetoes. "So, you need to check what applies to Toronto....elsewhere I read that Toronto has pretty stiff rules...so, I wish you luck.
