I was born in 1938 and grew up in TN.I don't recall knowing an unmarried mother who gave her child the father's name until about the late 1960's.Until then the father was not usually in the picture after the pregnancy was discovered.I believe that many times the mother's family did not wish to give the baby the name of a person who did not take responsibility.Don't discredit the mother. She was just doing what was acceptable at the time.Of course, it would be a different situation if the couple lived together, but wasn't married. But overall, the child was just given the mother's name if the couple wasn't married. Also, they were not aware that later in life so many would be into finding "their roots."
Even now some newspapers will not print the father's name in a birth announcement if the couple is not married.
