Garrison child adopted by Charles Pendleton

I am trying to find info on my Grand Father Griffin W Pendleton My mom told me his last name was Garrison before he became a Pendleton. In the 1910 Census for Bedford Co VA it list
Charles W Pendleton 45
Annie E Pendleton 35
Griffin W Pendleton 12
Otis Pendleton 7
Olter Pendleton 5
Viola Pendleton 4
Lizzie Pendleton 2

This would mean that Griffin was born around 1897 and in my records I have his birth date as 22-Sept-1897 So with what my mom told me and the fact that he is 5 years older then any of his brothers and sisters Griffin was adobted by Charles and Annie Pendleton.
Does anyone have any info on this? I would like to know about my family.
