Trenton: The New Jersey Senate approves giving adoptees access to original birth certificates.

It voted 30-7 on Monday to approve legislation designed to help adoptees learn their history.

Adoptees can currently only see a birth certificate with their adoptive parents' names. The proposal would allow future adoptees to get certificates with the names, birthplaces, birth dates and occupations of biological parents.

Those already adopted in New Jersey could obtain their birth certificate, although birth parents could contact the state to ask their names be deleted. If they do, they would have to provide a medical history.

Opponents said the law would cause problems for those who gave up children thinking they would remain anonymous.
