The way the census taker wrote down his name, his name is "Roy Melvin". His first name is Roy and his last name is Melvin. (this is not the only place in the census you find this pattern)

It states his dad and mom were born in Iowa.

If you go to the 1880 census you will find one,

1880 NEBRASKA GAGE ROCKFORD
City of Beatrice, County of Gage
Series: T9 Roll: 749 Page: 80B line 6 border
MELVIN R 49 W born in Iowa, Census in NE GAGE ROCKFORD 1880
common labor living in a boarding house, that also had teamsters and Rail Road labors in the same house. People had a way to move around the country side ready at hand.
