Pam, can you share this with Patricia McNeill Gardner. This is what we have on Barnett Adkisson (their spelling)
This is anecdotal from Historical Sketches of Pocahontas Coouty, West Virginia by William T. Price Published by the Price Brothers in Marlinton, WV in 1901.The information is from a chapter titled Diana Saunders. The information on Barnett and Eleanor is supposedly from John Adkisson.Sorry no dates on anything.Again, this is strictly anecdotal, no proof of any of this.
From the book:
Diana was married to Cyrus Saunders of Madison Co., Va.He was a merchant and a citizen of prominence.Diana is described as". . . to her personality, she had been formed in 'Nature's choicest mould (sic)' and in her youth must have been the peer of Edgar Allen Poe's 'rare and radiant maiden.'"She was a local "healer" (my words) as she is called a doctor in this account. She was known to scold the young men in the neighborhood who promised marriage and then reneged. As an elderly woman, she offered to fight (physically) one of these young men.
Diana's children were Anna, Eleanor, Cyrus, and Isaac.
Eleanor married Barnett Adkisson. They lived on Spruce Flats at the head of Swago.
The children of Barnett and Eleanor Diana Adkisson:
Catherine who married William Tyler and then Jacob Weiford, from Madison County, lived near Millpoint.
William who married Martha Jones, from Madison County, lived on Spruce Flats.
Abel, first wife was Susannah, daughter of Daniel Adkisson and later married Frances Hughes, one son listed Oliver Blake, lived on the head of Swago.
Daniel married Mary Holmes of Madison County, settled on Spruce Flats.
Frances married James Silvey and then Joseph Rodgers, lived near Millpoint.
Nancy married Benjamin Taylor of Nicholas County and settled on the New River. He was a hatter.
Martha Jane (could this be your Mariah?) married James Arthur of Webster County and went to the western part of the state.
Lucinda, the youngest married Rev. Joshua Buckley and lived at Buckeye.
Later in the book I found a reference to Jane McNeil marrying John E. Adkisson
a Johnathan McNeil (spelled with one L in the book) married an Angelina Adkisson, daughter of Daniel. She had two daughters: Mrs. Aaron Kees and Mrs. John Buckley ( my note--relative of the Rev. Joshua?)The sons were Asa, Wm Daniel, Doc, Ulysses, and Enoch
a Clairborne McNeil married Elizabeth Adkisson.Their daughter was Charlotte who married Joseph Pennell.Their sons were Joshua B, D.T., and Senator N.C. McNeil from Marlinton.
Theses were just stray references, no dates, no hint of who these Adkissons were other than the reference that Angelina was Daniel's daughter.
Hopes this helps at least with names.
Good luck,
Barbara Atkinson Henry
