William Anderson ADKINS [William Aude ADKINS](Hezekiah ADKINS [“Karr”]5, Elias ADKINS4, Hezekiah ADKINS3, Parker V. ADKINS2, William Atkinson ADKINS1) was born about 1869 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. He married Elizabeth A. GARTIN {“Lisa”], daughter of Lewis Cass GARTIN and Rhoda ELKINS . She was born in 1876 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. See Adkins book, page 169.
Note: The marriage record for Caroline Adkins, William A. Adkins’s daughter, gives his name as what appears to be Auel Adkins but might possibly be Aud Adkins. It had occurred to me that the middle name Aude might be a mistranscription of Anse, a common nickname for Anderson, but the name on the license does not appear to be Anse.
Note: Ronnie Adkins’s book, page 169 lists: William Aude Adkins born August 1869 and died about 1960; son of Hezekiah Adkins and Liza Elkins. He married Eliza A. Gartin, born Nov. 1874, daughter of Caa and Rhoda. Their children: Wealthy, born November 1892; married Unknown Porter. Caroline, born July 1894, married George F. Farley; Delbert born 1896, married Parisee Vance; Vinson, born April 1898. Wilda, married Unknown White. Jink. Bessie, married Shafer McNeely. Alice, married Earl Bills. Fannie, married Joe Neace.
West Virginia Vital Research Records lists the birth of Bessie Adkins on 27 January 1901 to Alderson Adkins and Liza Gartin. The delayed birth certificate was issued on the basis of an affidavit by the father and on Bible records.
On page 292, the Adkins book lists: William Aaron Adkins, born Lincoln County, West Virginia on 11 September 1872, son of Burrell Adkins and Malissa Adkins. He married Eliza ____; he married second Cora Lilly. Children of William Aaron Adkins: Wealtha, born about 1893, married Millard Elkins; Caroline, born about 1895; Lewis Delbert, born about 1896; Vinson, born about 1898 and died before 1910.
Note: William Aaron Adkins and William Aude Adkins/William Anderson Adkins were first cousins, twice removed. Elias Adkins was the former’s great-great grandfather and the latter’s grandfather.
Note the similarity of the birthdates and names of the children listed for the two men named William A. Adkins. One of the two men no doubt is the father of Weltha Adkins, who married Millard F. Elkins. They were divorced and she married Gilbert McComas. Note: William Aude Adkins is often listed online as William Anderson Adkins.
It seems likely that William Aaron Adkins did not in fact marry Eliza Unknown before marrying Cora Lilly. The children listed as his in Ronnie Adkins’s book probably are the children of William Aude Adkins/William Anderson Adkins and Eliza Ann Gartin. First, Aaron is listed as single, rather than as divorced or widowed, on the certificate of his marriage to Cora Lilly {West Virginia Vital Research Records]. Second, he is listed as single in the 1900 census where he appears with his father and brother, Samuel. Third, he is listed as having been married only once in the 1910 census where he appears with his wife Cora, and their children.
William Aude Adkins/William Anderson Adkins and Eliza Ann Gartin are more likely to be the parents of Weltha Adkins. First, the evidence in the preceding paragraph seems to go some way in ruling out William Aaron Adkins. Second, Weltha’s marriage to Millard Elkins took place at the home of L. C. Gartin—no doubt Lewis Cass Gartin, her maternal grandfather. Incidentally, Weltha is listed as divorced on her later certificate of marriage to Gilbert McComas. Third, Richard Adkins, son of Hezekiah Adkins and William Anderson Adkins’s brother, appears in the 1900 census next door to William and Eliza.
[Son of Burwell Adkins [William Aaron ADKINS*** was born 11 September 1872 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. He married Eliza UNKNOWN.* He married second Cora LILLY. See Adkins book, page 292.
