This posting is intended to be as much a "heads-up" notice for Adkins researchers as a question.
In March 1779 John Marshall (d. 1785) "gave" his son, James, half of a 220-acre tract in Brunswick Co., VA. and in Nov 1779 he gave his son Benjamin the other half of the tract.
In 1783 James Marshall sold his half to James Adkins/Atkins of Brunswick County:
[Brunswick] “James Marshall of Brunswick Co to James Adkins of same. 13 Dec 1783. 5 shillings. 110 acres now in his use, which was part of a patent formerly belonging to John Marshall dated 28 Sep 1732, on the south side of Meherrin River, joining Gresham, Pennington, Samuel Marshall, the river. Wit: William (x) Adkins, James (x) Adkins, John (x) Adkins. Proved 22 Dec 1783.” [“Brunswick County Will Book 2, p. 244” – Bradley, Dr. Stephen E., Jr., Brunswick County, Virginia, Will Books, Volume 1, Will Books 2 and 3, 1739-1769, p. 36.]
And in 1784 Benjamin Marshall sold his half:
[Brunswick] “Benjamin Marshall & his wife Keziah (x) of Brunswick Co to David Hudson of Lunenburg Co. 13 Mar 1784. £110 VA. 110 acres on the south side of Meherrin River, joining Gresham, Atkins. Wit: Asa Gresham, James Atkins, William Hudson. Proved 22 Mar 1784.” [“Brunswick County Will Book 2, p. 272” – Bradley, Dr. Stephen E., Jr., Brunswick County, Virginia, Will Books, Volume 1, Will Books 2 and 3, 1739-1769, p. 39.]
Same acreage, and same location, but Benjamin asked for and got £110 for his half, while James only asked for and got 5 shilling for his half! The token selling price from James Marshall to James Adkins strongly suggests to me some sort of familial relationship that one often sees when a father-in-law is making a gift to, e.g., a son-in-law soon after a marriage of a daughter.
I am a James Marshall descendant and at this time know next to nothing about the Adkins family of Brunswick County. Does anyone "out there" know of anything that would tend to confirm my hypothesis that James Adkins might have been a recently acquire son-in-law of James Marshall, or anything to refute that hypothesis?
