I have just found the Ater Family Genealogy Forum.Do you think the name Eater is in the same family? It is pronounced like Ater (with a long A) and silent E.If so, I would like very much to exchange information with you.My family of Eaters is from Illinois in Perry County. The first Eater there was a Henry Eater who died there in 1845 with only one heir, Jonas Eater.Henry was reported to have been born in 1805 in Pennsylvania, went west and stopped somewhere in Ohio where his son, Jonas, was born in 1833, and then moved on to Illinois about 1840.Somewhere (either in Pennsylvania or in Ohio) he married an Elizabeth Hunter who also died in 1845 in Illinois.
However, in the Census of 1910, Jonas reported that he was born in Pennsylvania, and that both his mother and father were born in Maryland - not in Pennsylvania.
I have always assumed that Eater is German, but checking with many German friends, cannot account for the spelling and the pronunciation.
Have been searching for info for years, but always run into a wall about the Ohio sojourn, not to mention the Pennsylvania heritage.I do know there were Eaters in Pennsylvania and also Eaters who were in the Am. Rev.
I would appreciate very much if you could tell me if Eater is also Ater.Thank you.
