There are 4 major Addingtons families that currently have descendants in the USA. The largest family descends from Henry Addington who arrived by at least 1735 when the first records for Henry are found. His father may be a John Addington who was first recorded in 1693 in Bucks County, PA but there are no confirmed records for this relationship. The next Addington family to arrive was first recorded with birth records dated 1743 for a son of John Addington in Fairfield Co., CT. The next Addington family is descended from William Addington who arrived in 1773 and settled in Virginia. The fourth Addington family is descended from an unknown Addington patriarch who first appears in Maryland around 1770. One branch of this family moved to Ohio Co., KY while another branch moved to Norfolk, VA.
We do not know where any of these 4 Addington families came from in England nor do we know any relationship between them proven by vital records. An Isaac Addington first appeared in Boston in 1640 but he had only one son who died without heirs so this Addington family name has died out. A Stephen Addington first appeared in New Jersey in 1793 but this Addington family also appears to have died out by 1880 with no surviving males.
This study consists of 8 Y-DNA samples from male descendants of the 4 major Addington families in the USA (Henry Addington of PA/SC, John Addington of CT, William Addington of VA, and Henry Addington of MD/KY, + Sabird Addington, b. 1804, NC). The sampling and results were done by Family Tree DNA of Houston, a leading company in this field.
The conclusions of the study are:
1. Henry Addington of PA/SC is closely related to John Addington of CT, probably 3 to 7 generations further back somewhere in England.
2. The other 3 Addington families (William Addington of VA, Henry Addington of MD/KY and Sabird Addington, b. 1804 NC) are not related to each other or the Addington family above.
3. Even though each family carries the Addington surname, they must have picked up the name in different locations or under different circumstances.
