Dear David,
Thank you so much for solving this mystery!!! I'll tell you what I know about his descendants. Howe, first there are some things to add to your posting.
At the very end you have listed "Dona Rebecca Barnes". I believe that's a mistake, unless she is the granddaughter of James (b. 14 Oct 1847; m. 12 Dec 1866; d.20 Sept 1891)and Sarah Jane Smith Barnes (b.1842/3; d.1874). This is unlikely, because of the date...I'll explain: My great-grandmother, DORA Rebecca Addington, has that birthdate (I believe the year is 1886, but my memory might be wrong), and that family last name is through her mother, Mary J. Barnes (daughter of the above Barnes couple). Here is the 1870 census from Missouri:
Roaring River, 30 July 1870 Barry Co.
BARNES
James 22 M farmer
Sarah J. 27 F
Mary J. 02 F
Jasper 01 M

Mary J. Barnes Addington (m. 1883, Barry CO.,MO) had a brother Thomas, who settled in Palaverte Valley/ Imperial Valley, CA. It's
possible that your James and Dona rebecca Barnes listings are a nephew and neice to Mary, but I think (the girl) might simply be a mix-up.
DESCENDANCY:
William H. Addigton and his wife Mary had two children that I know of. Evidently, the couple divorced, and she remarried Gardner Wilson.
The two children from the first marriage were Dora Rebecca Addington and Dovie Addington. Dovie ws the youngest, and I don't know what her full name may have been.
On 17 Sept 1910 (Sacramento) Dora Rebecca married George Ralph Hauskins, son of James Tiffen Hauskins and Isabelle Bailey. James was the son of Clayton Tiffen Hauskins and Elza C. Taylor.
Isabelle was the daughter of James Bailey and Docia/Dosha Lucas.

Dora Rebecca and James had three surviving children. During the delivery of their fourth child, Dora's spleen ruptured, and she and the baby died (28 Mar 1918).
The three children mentioned are:
Mary Elizabeth (became Marybelle) b.1913;
Barbra Dovie b. 1914; d. c1956; and Dora Luciel b. 1916.
For the sake of anonymity for people still living, I won't mention names of their husbands, children, and grandchildren, of which I am one.

Dovie Addington married Harry Clifford, and they had a daughter, Luciel (Lucille) Clifford, who was born around 1906. the family lived somewhere around/in Oakland, which would also explain William Addington in Oakland in the 1910 census that you listed.
Grandma says taht Dovie died around 1917.
I have William listed in the 1900 census Lovelock, NV) as being a boarder with Chris Beck. I guess his marriage to the young Mary Barnes ( She was 15 years old when she got married, as my grandmother says) didn't even last a decade.
Thanks again for everything!
Virginia
