Susannah-daughter of John Adcock b.1754?
I have been intermittently searching for the parents of my gr gr grandmother Susannah Adcock Hopkins.I just found some notes in an old pile of papers. The notes were put together by a cousin of my mother's who began her family research in the 1920's so she knew grandchildren of the subjects of her research and had their knowledge to go on.I quote her notes:
"Susannah's (my gr gr grandmother) mother was named Elizabeth - she died in 1816.Her father's name was John. Her brothers and sisters were: Sam, John, William, George, Johana and Nancy." Susannah was born Oct. 14, 1803.
This information has me looking at the family of John Adcock, b. 1754.There are some discrepancies--If the list of brothers and sisters could refer to the family of John Adcock b. 1754 (and it does follow it pretty closely) it leaves out Tenson (Stinson) and adds an unrecorded Johana not to mention an unrecorded Susannah! Also, the wife of John (b. 1754) was named Nancy and not Elizabeth.
One significant thing is that my mother's cousin listed a Sam as the brother of my Susannah. After as thorough a search as I have been able to make, I find only two Samuel Adcocks in the time period around 1830 when Samuel first appears in a census--a Samuel who was first in Buckingham county, VA about 1810 and then apparently moved to Rockingham Co. NC between 1820 and 1830 and stayed there if the cenus records are accurate.
On the other hand the Sam Adcock who was the son of John (b. 1754) is reported by many to be the Samuel Adcock in the 1830 Greene Co. AL census, who married Huldah Brazeale there in 1830, who purchased land in Greene County in 1835 and who apparently moved with Lambeth and Susannah Adcock Hopkins to Perry Co. AL and purchased land on August 15, 1837 when both Lambeth and his mother Elizabeth purchased land.Sam's land was adjacent to the land of Elizabeth Hopkins, Lambeth's widowed mother. And Lambeth, husband of Susannah and his mother Elizabeth had moved from Davidson Co. TN before 1825--which was where John (b. 1754) died, I believe.
A William Adcock also moved to Perry Co., purchased land at the same time and in the same location and married a Mary Ann Russell in Perry Co. in 1839.Could he be the son of John of Davidson Co., TN?
Do I have enough evidence to speculate that Susannah is an unrecorded child of John and Nancy and that family tradition has Susannah's mother's name all wrong?
Family tradition also says that Susannah was born in Putnam Co. GA, but she can't be the daughter of John and Lydia Lowe Adcock there because none of the children fit and they didn't get married until 1805.There is a James Adcock who had a wife Elizabeth who was granted land as a Revolutionary soldier in Washington Co. GA in 1785.Does anyone know anything about his family.Would my Susannah fit in there?
Thanks for any assistance.
