Elijah Adams (1764-1814), son of Robert Adams (d. 1783) and his wife Mourning (generally assumed to be a daughter of Paul Pigg), died in Pittsylvania County, Va. in 1814 without a will. Elijah had married in that county in 1785 (marriage bond dated 15 Apr 1785) to Elizabeth Maneas. Without a will the identity of their children has been a problem for many researchers.
To follow are records showing that Elijah Adams and his wife Elizabeth (Maneas) Adams of Pittsylvania County, Va. had 8 surviving children. These 8 children can be proven since their identities are given in Pittsylvania County, Va. records showing that they were heirs of Elijah's estate. I have posted abstracts of these records below, along with additional marriage information for some of Elijah’s children, for those people interested in this family but who otherwise have not had the time or opportunity to find them. I hope it will be of help. (I descend from Elijah's son Redmond Adams and have been researching the Adamses of Pittsylvania County, Va. for many years. A cousin and skilled researcher, Nancy Lenz Harvey, also a descendant of Elijah’s son Redmond plus his son Stokely Adams, provided some of the following abstracts.)
Elijah Adams (1764-1814) & his wife Elizabeth Maneas of Pittsylvania County, VA had the following 8 children. Their exact birth order is unknown:
Redmond Adams – married 1807 to Mary Grigsby
Rhoda Adams – married 1806 to Meredith Meade
Edmund Adams – married by 1818 to Patsy Vaden
Millicent Adams – married 1809 to James Emmerson
Elizabeth Adams – married 1818 to William Bryant
Stokely Adams – married 1825 to Winifred Vaden
Creed T. Adams – marred 1831 to Mary Ann P. Giles
Allison Adams – married 1832 to Phoebe Vaden
Below are key records for these 8 children that prove their relationship to Elijah Adams & Elizabeth Maneas:
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 12 July 1806: for Meridith Meade and Rhoda Adams. Surety. William Williams.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 26 Dec 1807: for Redman Adams and Mary Polly Grigsby, daughter of Moses Grigsby who consented. Surety: Jamerson Corbin.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 15 May 1809: for James Emmerson and Milley Adams. Milley was listed as a daughter of Elijah Adams who was surety to the bond. A minister’s return noted the marriage was on 16 May 1809.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Court Order Book 16, p. 376: order dated 21 Nov 1814 authorizing Elizabeth, the widow of Elijah Adams, to administer his estate. (Thus, Elijah Adams died prior to 21 Nov 1814.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 21, p. 25: Deed dated 10 Sept 1816; recorded 19 May 1817: Edmund Adams for $100 bought from Meredith Meade and wife Rhoda of Logan County, Ky. all their part in the estate of Elijah Adams, deceased, being 400 acres of land on both sides of the Banister River which Elijah Adams, deceased, had owned and used at the time of his death, with Rhoda being one of Elijah’s heirs. Witnesses to deed: John Adams, William Adams, Bazel Nelson. (Thus, Rhoda Meade was a daughter of Elijah Adams.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 22, p. 82: Deed dated recorded 21 Oct 1818: Edmund Adams and wife Patsy Adams (both signed with X marks) for $600 sold to Thomas Davis their undivided interest in the estate of Elijah Adams. It further explains that “whereas Elijah Adams father of the said Edmund Adams departed this life intestate” … having owned 400 acres of land on the Banister River in Pittsylvania County, Va., that Edmund was entitled as an heir to one-eight part. It also noted that Edmund had purchased the interest of another heir of Edmund Adams: Rhoda Mead, and husband Meredith Mead. (Thus, clearly, Edmund Adams was a son of Elijah Adams. Edmund’s marriage is not recorded in Pittsylvania Co., Va.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 24 Nov 1818: for William Bryant and Elizabeth Adams. Minister’s return stated they married 26 Nov 1818. (Note: While it recorded that she was a “daughter of Redmon Adams” who signed the certificate and also acted as surety, this appears to be an error in the original record since Elizabeth was a daughter of Elijah Adams, as will be shown in the next document. (Note: A conjecture is that Redmond Adams was recorded here "in locus parentis" since their father Elijah is dead and his sister Elizabeth seems then to be under 18.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 23, p. 85: Deed dated 18 Feb 1820: William Bryant and wife Elizabeth Bryant for $225 sold to Thomas Davis a tract of land supposed to contain 66 acres, being one-eighth part of the dower of Elizabeth, widow of Elijah Adams. (Thus, Elizabeth Bryant was a daughter of Elijah Adams)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 23, p. 494: Deed dated 21 Feb 1820: Stokely Adams sold to William Meadows 81 acres, being lot #7 in the division of the lands of Elijah Adams, deceased. (Stokely signed with an X) (Thus, Stokely Adams was a son of Elijah Adams.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 23, p. 226: Deed dated 13 May 1820: Redmond Adams for $332 sold to Edmund Adams land on the north side of the Banister River opposite the old Stone house containing by late survey fifteen acres, being a lot in the division of the land of Elijah Adams, deceased, together with all of Redmond’s interest in the dower allotted to Elizabeth Adams. Witnesses were Stokely Adams, O. P. Terry, G. W. Johnson, Thomas Williams, and John Williams. (Thus, Redmond Adams was a son of Elijah Adams.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 23, p. 223: Deed recorded 13 May 1820: Edmund Adams owed $61.95 to Thomas Williams, payable by “June 1st next,” so to secure the debt Edmund mortgaged the land he had purchased from Redmond Adams on the north side of the Banister River together with all his interest in the dower tract of Elizabeth Adams. The land was mortgaged to Thomas Williams and George Johnson who could sell the land if no paid by Edmund. (signed by Edmund Adams)
Pittsylvania County, Va. 1820 Land Book (in County Clerk’s Office in Chatham, Va.) lists Redmond, Allison, Stokely, Creed, and widow Elizabeth as heirs of the estate of Elijah Adams. (Note: They were not the only heirs.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 8 Feb 1825: for Stokely Adams and Winifred Vaden, daughter of Sylvester A. Vaden who consented. Surety: James A. Vaden.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 29, p. 496: Deed dated 17 March 1828: Creed T. Adams sold for $145 to William Meadows 50 acres of land on the Banister River assigned to him in the division of the estate of Elijah Adams, but not his interest in the dower land of his mother Elizabeth who was then living. The 50 acres was further described as “it being all the interest Creed holds in the land descended to him by the death of his father Elijah Adams.” Witness: Greenwood Adams. (Creed signed with an X) (Thus, Creed T. Adams was a son of Elijah Adams.)
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 19 Dec 1831: for Creed T. Adams and Mary Ann P. Giles. Surety: Stephen Giles.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 33, p. 148: Deed recorded 31 Dec 1831: Stokely Adams sold to William Davis his part of the dower of his mother Elizabeth Adams.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Marriage Bond dated 25 Dec 1832: for Allison Adams and Phebe Vaden, daughter of Silvester A. Vaden who consented. Surety: James Adams.
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 35, p. 167: Deed recorded 19 Aug 1833: Allison Adams and wife Phoebe, and Creed Adams and wife Polly, and Thomas Williams and wife Harriet together for $65 sold to William Davis their rights in the dower of Elizabeth Adams. (Thus, Allison Adams and Creed T. Adams were sons of Elijah Adams.) [Note: Thomas Williams and wife Harriet were not heirs/descendants of Elijah Adams. They had an interest in the dower lands of Elizabeth Adams only because of the mortgage given to Thomas Williams by Edmund Adams on 13 May 1820 in Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 23, p. 223 -- a record summarized earlier.]
Pittsylvania County, Va. Deed Book 39, p. 289: Deed recorded 16 Jan 1837: Allison Adams and wife Phoebe for $404 sold to Daniel Bradley 58 acres, being land assigned to Allison in the division of the land of his father, Elijah Adams. (Again, Allison Adams was shown as a son of Elijah Adams.)
