Gravestone: T.M. Adams, d. 1881, son of L.G. & L.M.
We recently discovered an old cemetery that has been abandoned. It is about a mile or so south of Mound City, just south of the border with Anderson County, and about a mile east of County Road 2022. Other nearby towns are Elkhart and Grapeland.
Upon inquiring, we learned that the cemetery had been called variously Denson Cemetery, Denson-Bridges Cemetery, and Bridges Cemetery. The cemetery apparently dates back to the mid-1800s, and last used probably 75 to 85 years ago.
My grandparents are buried in this cemetery, Stephen H. Shirey and Martha Ann Bridges Shirey. Just this past week, we have had the ground cleared, and will soon search for gravestones.
According to local surveys, in 1985, the following markers were found:
ADAMS
T. M., b. 3-14-1878, d. 11-7-1881, son of L.G. and L.M.
BRIDGES
J. Raymond, b. 5-11-1970, d. 3-9-1872, son of Edmond Frank and Martha Tipton Bridges. Edmond was son of James W. Bridges, Jr.
George, b. 1-15-1880, d. 9-17-1881.
J. Wilford, b. 12-30-1871, d. 9-1-1882.
LEE
J. Howard, b. ?, d. 10-10-1883 (c. 2 days old)
If anyone has any information about this cemetery, we would appreciate you contacting us.
