Susannah Wood m. John Adams
I could use some help.I'm seeing a lot of postings in this forum that John Adams of southern Virginia was married to Susannah WOOD.
There's no doubt that a John Adams of early Lunenburg County was married to a Susannah, as in:
“21 Feb 1760 – John Adams to William White, both of Lunenburg Co., 26 pounds 7 shillings 6 pence, 400 acres; Lunenburg Co., both sides Little Blue Stone Crk., from Morris’s corner SE, to Talbot.
Wit: John I Humphris, John White, William White Sig: John (mark) Adams,
Rec: 3 Jun 1760 Susannah Adams
Susanna, wife of Adams, relinquished her dower right”
[“Lunenburg Deed Book 6, pp. 98-99” — Evans, June Banks, Lunenburg County, Virginia, Deed Book 6, 1760-1761, p. 20; Elliott, Katherine B., Early Settlers, Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Volume II, p. 53.]
I find this John Adams to be involved in a number of other records associated with the Humphries and Halliburton (and allied families) of Lunenburg, then Mecklenburg, counties VA.I don't know whether it is the same pair or not, but it probably is: John and Susannah Adams witnessed the 1768 will of David Halliburton, Sr., of Orange County, NC.
The only Susannah Wood I can find in the general area is the one named in 1746 Brunswick County will of Richard Wood:
“Will of Richard (x) Wood 28 Apr 1746 4 Sep 1746
Of St. Andrew Parish.‘very sick and Weak of body’
To my wife Mary – the plantation where I now live with all the land belonging to it which is the same left to her by her first husband John Humphries.
To my only daughter Susanna – 200 acres in Brunswick Co. for which I have a patent & joining the above land.
To my wife Mary & my daughter Susanna – after my debts are paid, all my personal estate, except my negro woman Jenny to be divided equally between them.
To my daughter Susanna – sd negro woman Jenny after her mother’s death but my sd wife to have the use of her during her lifetime.
I have brought court action for trespass against Thomas Lloyd in sd Brunswick Co; should it not be settled, my executors to bring action against sd Lloyd in behalf of my daughter Susannah; I declare that sd Lloyd sold to me 347 acres on Allens Creek & that he affirmed his right to sd land & that he had conveyed no part of it, & that any money recovered to be put at interest for my daughter Susanna until she come of age or marry.
Ex. my friend Walter Campbell, my wife Mary
Wit. Mathew Hubard, John Ogbun, Tabitha Ogbun.”
[“Brunswick Will Book 2, p. 122” — Bradley, Dr. Stephen E., Jr., Brunswick County, Virginia, Will Books, Vol. 1, Will Books 2 and 3, 1739 1769 1783-1785, pp. 20-21.]
Is this the Susannah Wood that everyone thinks married John Adams? If not, then who was Susannah's father, or family?
If this is the one that is thought to have married John Adams, then I have an unpleasant surprise:
“Charles (C) Humphris of Lunenburg Co. to Thomas Cadet Young of Brunswick Co. 24 May 1762.£20 VA.200 acres which had been a patent to Richard Wood 20 Aug 1747 who willed it to his daughter Susannah Wood who with her husband David Ally Burton conveyed it to sd Charles Humphris, on the north side of Tequa Creek, joining Wood, Harrison. Also signed by Mary (x) Humphris.Wit: Henry Briggs, Daniel Apperson, Ralph (x) Hubbard.Proved 26 Jun 1762.John Robinson CC”
[“Brunswick Deed Book 7, p. 149” — Bradley, Dr. Stephen E., Jr., Brunswick County, Virginia, Deed Books, Vol. 3, 1755-1764, p. 71.]
The Richard Wood mentioned in the above deed is the same Richard Wood who died ca. 1746, and the Susannah Wood mentioned is obviously his daughter. And equally obvious this deed says that Susannah Wood married David Ally Burton (Halliburton) sometime before 1762.
About two months later in 1762, David Halliburton sold land and no wife was mentioned as releasing her dower rights, either in the deed, or in the court records.I would conclude, then, that Susannah had died prior to 1762, because it must have been about this time that David Halliburton married Amey Humphries(?), who was his wife when he made his will.
Seems that either I'm confused with facts, or everyone else seems to be confused that Susannah who married John Adams was a Wood.Does anyone have any proof or hard evidence to support the latter conclusion?
