It is great to see some new research being done on the Adair/Hassell families.I am descended from Catherine Adair & Her husband "Black John" Hassell through their son Francis Marion Hassell.I believe you are incorrect as to the parentage of John Hassell. His parents were Benjamine and Mary Caswell Hassell. His Rev. War Pension application includes records from his family Bible listing children and thier birthdates.
Charles Connelly has done quite a bit of research on the Hassell and Adairs, although there is still a lot of questions about John Adair. Please check out his web site at http://www.geocities.com/cwconnelly/http://www.geocities.com/cwconnelly/
On his site he writes:
There is a John Adair listed as the Head of household in Hickman Co., TN in the 1820 Census pg. 20 and there are two John Adair's on the 1830 Census along with a Benjamin Adair. Alfred Darden is listed on the same page in 1830. Andrew M. Adair b. 25 June 1815 married Emily Darden who was born in 1827.
My gg-grandmother was Lucretia Adair b. 1811 in Maury Co., TN and said to be the daughter of John Adair. She married Jacob Darden Gardner and was living in Hickman Co., on the 1900 census.
If anyone has information on the Adair Family from Tennessee that could help connect my line your help would be greatly appreciated.
According to information I have found they were in Maury Co., TN in 1811 and Benjamin was a grown man at the time. John Adair bought land in Maury Co. in 1811 and that is the year my gg-grandmother, Lucretia Adair was born. She married Jacob Darden Gardner and was living with my g-grandfather and g-grandmother in 1900 in Hickman Co. There has been some work done on Andrew M. Adair b. 25 June 1815, who was the son of Benjamin.

It is believed that our John is related to John Adair (md Catherine Palmer) the Governor of Kentucky. There are so many similarities to the names of their children and those of Catherine Adair Hassell’s.

Generation No. 2
3.JOHN (BLACK JOHN)2 HASSELL (BENJAMIN1) was born May 18, 1798 in North Carolina,Tyrrell Co. (Source: Benjamin Hassell's Rev. War Records.), and died December 28, 1836 in Tennessee, Hickman Co.He married CATHERINE (KATIE) ADAIR (Source: *Relationship to John is a supposition-not proved.) 1824 in Tennessee, Hickman Co., daughter of JOHN ADAIR.She was born 1807 in Tennessee or Kentucky (1808?) 1/2 Eastern Cherokee.
Notes for JOHN (BLACK JOHN) HASSELL:
Per Barbara Roberts Kingston Springs, TN(Genealogist who has done a lot on Hassells)Hassells came from Tyrell Co. NC , but the ones in Hickman Co., first went to Hardin, Mecklenburgand Davidson Co. NC before they came to Tenn.Check Records for them there. Also, check Sumner Co.
Legend has it that"Black John" Hassell, He was called "Black John" because his mother was Indian(I have heard her name was"Big Toe") But the Bible records in Benjamin Hassell’s Revolutionary War records shows a birth date for John that matches Census records.
Black John had dark hair ( I have a photo of him) His cousin was about the same age and also named John, he was blond, so to distinguish between the two they were called “Black John” and Tow-headed John.
In the Hickman County History, it mentions an Old John, older than Tow-headed and Black John.
He is said to have married an Indian woman, I believe her name was Polly.
Photo of Black John's Tombstone: The tombstone on the back row in the center marks the grave of John Hassell 1798-1870, better known as Black John.Next to John, his wife Catherine "Katy" Adair is also buried.Black John was a Baptist Preacher. The grave on the front row and on the left is a child of Black John that died at a very early age. The graves can be found in the Hassell Cemetery, located on what was Black John's property, just a little south of Tarkington's Store on Hassell Creek Rd. There is no writing on the stone, just a rock marking the spot.A good project for Black John Hassell descendants might be to place a new marker on his grave, so that future generations will be able to locate his grave.
Catherine Adair (bn 1807), daughter of John Adair of South Carolina. There is also a Lucretia Adair (Bn1811) living in the same area, who is said to be the daughter of John Adair of SC.Age is right to be Catherine‘s sister. She married Alfred Darden.
Children of JOHN HASSELL and CATHERINE ADAIR are:
i. NELLIE3 FANNIE,MILLEY??HASSELL, b. 1833; m. JAMES M. CAPPS.
ii. CELIA HASSELL, b. 1835.
iii. CATHERINE "KATIE" HASSELL, b. October 04, 1835; d. August 06, 1918; m. MAYBERRY.
iv. MILES JOHN HASSELL, b. 1838.
v. MARY HASSELL, b. 1840; m. PURCEL.
vi. FRANCIS MARION HASSELL, b. August 23, 1844, Tennessee, Hickman Co.; d. May 01, 1890, Tennessee, Hickman Co.; m. LOUISIANA V. RUSSELL, April 23, 1868, Tennessee (Source: Hickman co. Book 1 page 125.); b. December 24, 1851, Tennessee, Williamson Co.; d. December 05, 1921, Tennessee, Hickman Co..
Notes for FRANCIS MARION HASSELL:
Per Mack Hassell---Francis Marion went out hunting one spring, and the weather turned unseasonably cold and bitter. As he was returning home, he fell in a river. He became very ill, probably pneumonia, and died.
Sep 15, 2001 from the "That Hassell Bunch" Web Site Categories: Hickman Co. Hassell’sI would like to make a correction in the above family.I believe he was married twice. The 1870 census shows: F. M. Hassell, age 25, Eliza, 18, Mary, 4 and J. C... 3.F. M. Hassell married Lou Russell on the 23rd day of April 1869 (have copy of marriage license) in Hickman Co. so she must be the Eliza on the census.Mary Ellie Hassell was born December 28, 1867 and died May 27, 1927 in Hickman Co.She married George M. Neeley April 18, 1883 in Hickman Co.I have her death certificate and her father is listed as France Hassell and mother, Sue Russell.I also found the death certificate for Lou Russell Warren (She was married twice also, to Cornelius Neal Warren on September 5, 1890 in Hickman Co.) Her parents are listed as Josephus Russell and Mary Ann Davidson. The 1860 census shows Josephus Russell, 37, living in District #13 which is near District #2 (Little Lot), Ann M., 34, Mary S., 14, Benj. T., 13, Susan A., 11, Martha M. 9, Louzanah, 7, Stephen S., 5 and A. J. ,3.So I believe Francis Marion married Susan first and she died, probably in childbirth, then he married her sister, Louzanah. That wasn't unusual back then, especially when they had small children.George Neeley is a brother to my great grandfather and I have his line.
