re: David McCalla's parents were David and Mary (Polly) Harbison McCalla. David's mother died at the birth of his brother Thomas in 1756. Their father died a month later. David, Thomas, and a sister, Mary, were raised by an aunt who was either a HARBISON or GLADNEY. She was a school teacher in Culleybackey, (home of Houston family), co. Antrim, N. Ireland where both David McCalla's parents were born and died.
David McCalla came to America in 1768 and Thomas in 1774. David landed in Charleston, SC. Thomas landed in Delaware, settled first in PA and then c.1778 to SC.
(Sometimes McCalla was spelt McAula / McAulay)
Harbison cousins settled in Chester Co, SC.
Thomas and Sarah Gardiner McCalla's son, also named David, married Elizabeth Harbison.
Fitzhugh McMaster, in his history of Fairfield County, S.C. Chapter II, p.16, wrote, John Phillips, who during the Revolution was a Colonel in the British Army, had 2050 acres in land grants from 1761 to 1774. All of these were not in Fairfield County. John Winn and Joseph GLADNEY were surveyors for some of these.
Joseph Gladney's land located on a small branch of Jackson's Creek and the waters of the Little River, adjoined the grants of Jane McBride, Archibald PAUL,(from co. Antrim, N. Ireland ?) Ann Martin, Robert Martin, John Phillips, for whom he had been surveying, and Thomas Gladney.
Thomas Gladney's 100 acres were situated on Reedy Branch of Jackson Creek bounded by land of John Phillips, Bartholomew Austin, and vacant land. The survey was made by Richard Winn, and certified February 10, 1771.
Richard Gladney's neighbor on the northwest was Hugh McDaniel.
