Samuel Cole Williams, who edited Adair's "The History of the American Indians" for its 1930 reprint sponsored by The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Tennessee, used not only the JB geneology in preparing his introduction,"Adair the Man". He corresponded as well with Emmett Starr, noted Cherokee historian who gives an Adair line in his "History of the Cherokee Indians." In a letter to Cole, Starr noted that a John and Edward Adair, brothers, married Cherokee and have numerous descendents, incg. William Penn Adair and Lucian Burr Bell..Joel Bryan Mayes, a Cherokee chief and chief justice of the last resort of the Cherokee Nation was a descendent of the trader Adair according to Appleton's Encyclopedia of American Biography...In his intro. Cole at times contrasts JB to info. supplied by Ghent in an article on Adair for Dictionary of American Biography...I think their point of difference is on the early settlement in PA.... Ghent does not follow JB on this.....
Perhaps consulting Cole's sources would be helpful on this issue?
After his 1775 London trip, Adair supposedly settled down around nw NC and lived a much more obscure life than previously.(the region west of the Alleghanies, now known as Lower East Tenn., near TN-GA line.) See Cole's Editor's Preface for further references to archives and correspondence Cole used...
I personally need to know who the James Addair from Montgomery Co. was and why he signed a surety bond for David Mounts' marriage to Margaret Cline (dau. of Peter Cline, Sr.) on April 5, 1809.
Can anyone help? What was the Addair/Mounts relationship?
