Maybe we will never sort out all these people; more help is needed! I have come across some discrepancies between what I have written about Archibald Adair and what is in the newly published Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which says that Archibald Adair, d. 1647 was the fourth son of Ninian Adair and Catherine Agnew of Lochnaw. This appears to me to be a mix-up between Archibald's father Ninian and his grandfather Ninian; it looks from various online pedigrees as if it is the grandfather who married Agnew? Would Adair experts agree?
If this is a mistake, then I have somewhat less confidence in other of the ODNB's statements. F.i. it says that Archibald appears to have been presented to the living of Stonykirk in 1585. However he appears to have graduated in 1596, so I think the living must have been presented to an earlier Adair. Can anyone comment on the succession of ministers in Stonykirk? Somewhere I've seen a query birthdate of 1580 for "our" Archibald, so he is not likely to have been presented to a living as an infant, which he would have been if he had gone to university at the usual date.
ODNB doesn't mention the marriage to Jeneta Houston, which is attested by documents and gravestone; but says that he married a mistress McDowall of Garthland. THis is perfectly possible; can anyone confirm this? I wondered if he had married again; if this McDowall marriage does belong to the dean and bishop Archibald, I'd like to include it; however, I am wonering if possibly there is a mixup between two Archibald Adairs, perhaps the one who was in Stonykirk?
