I have recently encountered the 1860 census record of Hickman Co., TN, and seen the family group with which the name "Susan E. Adair" (age 11, born in TN), who is mentioned in message #2718 as "living with the Neafuls," is included. The orthography of the entry is a bit extravagant, and the name "Hassell" does indeed resemble "Neafull." I believe the head of this family is John Hassell, a farmer born in NC; the Catherine Hassell (age 52, born in Kentucky) listed below his name is almost certainly his wife. Four messages on the Hassell Family Forum assert that a John Hassell born ca. 1798 in NC married a Catherine Adair born ca. 1807 in Hickman Co., and message #63 adds "daughter of John (?) Adair." The author of #63 writes also, "I have been told that John Hassell was 1/4 Cherokee Indian (???)"; and the author of #133 writes of her John Hassell, born 1798 in Tyrrell Co., NC: "I have always heard that 'Black John' Hassell was 1/2 Cherokee." The lists of John and Catherine's children that I have seen vary slightly from GenForum record to record, and from Web site to Web site, but after several years I have cobbled together this composite: Benjamin (b. 1825), Letta (1827), Martha (1829), Catherine (1933), Celia (1835), Alice "Milly" (1837) Horace "Miles" (1838), Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (1840, Lucretia (1842), Francis Marion "F.M.," (1844), Ben Anderson aka Andrew (1846), Sarah (1847), and John Vincent (1851). I note that son Benjamin died 31 Dec. 1895 in Tulsa, OK, and was buried the next day in Hillside Cemetery, Skiatook, Osage Co., Cherokee Indian Territory (OK). I have been unable to verify "Black John" Hassell's reported Cherokee ancestry; nor have my efforts to identify the family of Susan E. Adair or that of Catherine (Adair) Hassell, daughter of "John (?)" of Hickman Co., been any more successful. (I have tried especially hard but vainlyto connect them with numerous Adairs with Cherokee connections.)
Incidentally, "Black John" is a brother, I believe, of my 3g-grandfather, Samuel Hassell (b. 1804 in Hickman, died 1842-1849 in Fulton Co., AR). His daughter, my 2g-grandmother Catherine (b. 1842 in Fulton Co., AR, died there 1918) and her "Indian blood" (some say Cherokee, some say Southeastern Siouan Blackfoot/Saponi) have been the subject of many hours of intermittent research since 1964. At this point, I think that her mother, Mary LNU, is a more likely origin for these stories than is Samuel Hassell.
I would be grateful for any help.
