The responses to my query re a will or other documentary proof for the sons of Thomas Adair are quite interesting. However, none of them address the real question WHERE IS THE PROOF of Thomas' children. I am familiar only with J.B. Adair's genealogy & he gives no references to his sources, nor do the others. The big question is not so much did Thomas had a son, James, but was he James, the Indian trader. The will which is puportedly that of James, the Indian trader, was filed in Bladen Co., N.C. (will book 1 page 476). The bequests are to 3 daughters apparently in the colonies, their children, Robert Adair or his heirs (no relation given) in Antrim Ireland, James Box (no relation given) of the Island of Bennet?, and Alexander Johnston (no relation given) of Ireland. There are no legatees other than Robert who bear the surname of Adair. It is my feeling that J. B. Adair did not just pull his data out of the air, but had some source. Probably, he had 3 sons, but the problem is to sort them and the next generation. I have proven my line back to James Adair of Montgomery Co. Va. who settled there about 1770. There is also a Cornelius in Augusta Co. These Scotch-Irish generally settled in Pa. for awhile then went into western Maryland & Virginia & from there to the Carolinas. Trying to trace them is a problem due to the frequency of migration, lack of records, and frequent division & creation of new counties. I do know that descendants of the Carolina branch & the Montgomery branch all settled in southeast Tenn. near Knoxville about the same time. The only way to resolve this is to get as much original documentation as possible. Jim
