The Adairs came to America about 1730 from County Antrim.
David McCalla's parents were David and Mary (Polly) Harbison McCalla. David's mother died at the birth of his brother Thomas in 1756.Their father died a month later. David, Thomas, and a sister, Mary, were raised by an aunt who was either a Harbison or Gladney. She was a school teacher in Culleybackie, near Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland where both David's parents were born and died. David came to America in 1768 and Thomas in 1774.David landed in Charleston, SC.Thomas landed in Delaware, settled first in Pennsylvania and then to SC about 1778.
So it would seem to me that the Harbisons probably migrated during the times of the McCalla brothers, or maybe during the great migration of the other Antrim Presbyterian families during the 1760's-1770's.I have not found mention of the Harbisons in Pennsylvania, but think they probably landed in SC.Moores were coming as early as 1764, as well as the Pedens.Harbison cousins settled in Chester County, SC.
Thomas and Sarah Gardiner McCalla's son, also named David, married Elizabeth Harbison. Their daughter Sarah McCalla married Alexander Paden, a brother to Daniel and Robert Paden.Mary Adair Nixon McCalla's two daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth McCalla, married the Paden brothers above, Daniel and Robert.I am decended from Daniel and Catherine McCalla Paden. These families left SC in 1833 and settled in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, where many of their decendants live today. They established one of the first Presbyterian churches in the county, Bethany Presbyterian Church, where they are all buried.
A search of the following books might possibly give a date of immigration for the Harbisons: 'Protestant Immigrants to SC 1763-1773', by Revill and 'Scotch Irish Migration to SC 1772', by Jean Stephenson.Seems I recall there was also a connection between the Harbisons and the Storment family in Chester Co, SC, another County Antim, Ireland Presbyterian family.Hope this helps,
Rebecca Moss
