Message 2074 from Mike Montgomery on the Alexander family forum :
John ALEXANDER (b. Cecil Co., MD, in 1733, d. in 1814 in Knox Co., TN) had children :
Amelia/Amy (ancestor of Mike Montgomery,) m. Benjamin McNUTT 13 Feb, 1796 in Washington Co.),
Mary (m. Adam RANKIN),
Jonathan (m. Thurzy[?] BRIDGES 16 Mar. 1793),
Rhoda (m. James RODGERS 20 Mar. 1793 in Washington Co.), Agnes (m. L. E. NEWTON),
Francis (b. 1764, m. Jane ADAIR 26 Mar. 1791, d. 1830 in Blount Co., TN),
Hannah (b. 1768 in Gettysburg, PA, m. Willian DeWOODY 26 Mar. 1791 in Washington Co., d. 13 July 1822 in Cotton Port, Limestone Co., AL),
Tabitha (b. 1777, m. Joel DRYDEN 6 Oct. 1806 in Greene Co., TN, d. 9 Mar. 1844 in Greenville, TN), and
Elizabeth (b. 1780 in PA, m. Joseph Rogers BROWN 10 Sept. 1801 in Washington Co., d. 18 Nov. 1865 in Greenville, TN).

The only wife I (Miake)have seen attributed to John ALEXANDER is Agnes CRAIGHEAD (b. 1736 in PA, d. bef 1801 near Leesburg, Washington Co., TN), said my some at least of John's descendants to be a daughter of the famous Rev. Alexander CRAIGHEAD (b. 1705 in Donegal Co., Ireland, d. Mar. 1766 in Sugaw Creek, NC) and Agnes BROWN.

In favor of this claim are the similar ethnic and religious backgrounds and the ALEXANDERs and the CRAIGHEADs, and the fact that Rev. Alexander CRAIGHEAD's son Robert was a friend of John ALEXANDER in Knox Co., and a member of his church.

However, Ernest S. Craighead, in his "Craighead Ministers in Ulster and Colonial America, Scoth-Irish Presbyterian, 1633-1799" (Pittsburgh, PA, ca. 1955), while he acknowledges the claim on the part of some descendants of John ALEXANDER that his wife was the Rev. Alexander CRAIGHEAD's daughter, nevertheless concludes that "Agnes" is identical with another daughter, "Nancy," who was married to William RICHARDSON and George DUNLAP during the period when "Agnes CRAIGHEAD" was supposed to be married to John ALEXANDER.

Another CRAIGHEAD historian (whose name I cannot locate this morning) similarly denies the marriage of John A. and Agnes C., insisting that if they had indeed been married, then Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey, whose father knew both John ALEXANDER and Robert CRAIGHEAD (son of the Rev. Alexander), and in the house of whose father, Col. Francis Alexander RAMSEY, John ALEXANDER died, would have mentioned that fact in his 1918 _History of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, 1791_.

In light of these counterclaims, I (Mike)would be interested in hearing from anyone who has also heard of Agnes CRAIGHEAD or any other woman being named as the wife of John ALEXANDER, with or without "proof" or documentation, or who has any light or heat to shed on this issue.

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who can provide any corrections or additions to the information presented in the first paragraph above on the children of John ALEXANDER.
