William and Mary (Moore) Adair
Does anyone have the death date and place of William and Mary (Moore) Adair.William was the youngest of the three sons of Thomas (born about 1680), Ulster, Ireland, our immigrant ancestor and Margaret Henart (born about 1680 in Dublin) who were married in Portpatrick, Scotland in 1703.Their three sons of whom we have record are James Robert (b. 1709); Joseph (b. 1711) and William (b. ca. 1719).
William and Mary (Moore) Adair arrived in Chester County, South Carolina and settled along Fishing Creek about the mid-point of the southward migration into the area – in 1754.Mary (born 1729) was the daughter of James and Eliza (Newfville) Moore and after their marriage in 1749 William and Mary decided the 100 acres of free land on Fishing Creek would be a good place to start their family. Their children were as follows:
MARY, born 1755, married 1st Colonel John Nixon in 1774.In 1780 Colonel Nixon organized a company from the surrounding territory, “and as a valiant leader, was considered a ‘terror’ to the loyalists.”He was killed in 1780 by the British. Mary then married David McCalla, Jr. in 1781, who was also a Revolutionary soldier.Mary is remembered as a “heroine” of the Revolution because of her successful efforts, along with those of her sister-in-law Sarah McCalla, to rescue her brother John and Sarah’s husband Thomas, both ill with smallpox, from the imprisonment of British Colonel Francis Lord Rawdon.Mary died in 1807.The Chester, South Carolina chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is named in her honor.
BETSY, born about 1756, married John Moore and raised 15 children.
JOHN, born 9 January 1757, married Catherine Palmer, was a noted general and elected Governor of Kentucky, toe the United States Senate and the House of Representatives.Died 19 May 1840.
WILLIAM, born 1759, married Mary Irvine, was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary Army.
JAMES, born 1761, remained single, a Revolutionary soldier, died age 29.
ALEXANDER, died at age 16.
I have thus far found no record of William and Mary's death in Chester County, South Carolina. Then I assumed he went with his son General/Governor John and was buried at the Adair Family Cemetery near Harrodsburg, but that doesn't seem to be the case and the headstones were read for me yesterday and they weren't there.
William and Mary's most prominant son, John Adair married Catherine Palmer on 16 August 1841 in York County, South Carolina (I have her affidavit), and I wonder if perhaps William and Mary might have had purchased property in that County? If there are any William and Mary descendants who have any information, I would appreciate hearing from you.
I have considerable information on all three brothers
EXCEPT where and when William and Mary died.Thank you.
