Bessie (Martindale) Adair
Decatur County Journal-Iowa
Thursday, September 29, l92l
BESSIE, the daughter of MILES and ELIZABETH MARTINDALE, was born at Leon, Iowa, September 27, l883, and died September 24, l92l, at Ames, Iowa, aged three days less than thirty-eight years. She was married to ROBERT ADAIR, January l, l906. The latter died July 23, l9l0. For almost eleven years she fought her hard battle as a widow in bringing up her family and was married again July l, l92l, to OLIN ADAIR at St. Joseph, Mo. She leaves also one brother, ARTHUR MARTINDALE, of Leon, and four sisters, MRS. CARRIE BRIGHT, of Grand River; MRS. CORA PARSONS, of Algona; MRS. KATE and MRS. ELLA ADAIR, both of Leon, as well as her father and husband to mourn her passing. Her mother died August 20, l9l6. One brother had passed away in infancy.
About five years ago she became a member of the Brethren Church, of Leon, and had always tried to live uprightly in her hard situation in life ever since. No better hearted woman ever lived and the faithfulness with which she toiled without rest to rear and care for her family won for her the regard of all who knew her well.
She was taken away swiftly and without warning in the prime and vigor of life by a painful accident for which apparently no one was to blame amid the noise and confusion of a railroad crossing at Ames whither she was moving her family. The whole community joins in its expression of grief and shock at her untimely leave taking.
The funeral was conducted from the Brethren Church by Rev. Ronk, assisted by Rev. Coleman. Interment was in Leon Cemetery on Tuesday, September 27th.
