Joseph Adair Sr. was a Revolutionary Soldier

Gone to Georgia
by Stewart

887. Joseph A. Adair 510010-11010-0

This family was from Laurens District, S.C., where in 1790, Alexander, Benjamin, James, (2) John, and Joseph (2) were enumerated.
The family was previously in Pennsylvania and in--Augusta County, Va., by Aug. 21, 1746, when William Adair (who died in 1763) witnessed the will of Robert Sayers.
In Laurens District, S. C., Joseph Adair and wife Sarah Lafferty (from Bath County, Va.?) had son -
Joseph who with wife Sarah Dillard had son - John, who was born in South Carolina in 1753 and married Jane Jones (who married, 2nd, Green Jackson).

John Adair's children were:

1. Joseph Alexander, married 1811 Elizabeth McCord;
2. John Fisher (1785-1856) married Talitha Brantley and 2nd, Mary Radcliff Slaven;
3. Hiram, soldier of the War of 1812, who lived in Morgan and Upton Co.'s Ga.;
4. Jones (?);
5. Elizabeth, married Giles Garrett;
6. William of Morgan County;
7. Mary, married John Apperson;
8. Farmer (?) of Morgan County;
9. Susannah;
10. Sarah, died young;
11. James, married Sarah Dean.

Joseph appears in the Jackson County records from Aug. 3, 1800, when he was living on the Apalachee River (deed of Micajah Williamson as attorney for George Sibbald to John Davis, for adjoining land) and
Bozeman Adair is found in Jackson County from 1801, and Benjamin from 1802.
In the 1805 Jackson Lottery list, were Isaac, Jacob and Bozeman (who obtained headright land in 1810).
Robert Sidney Adair married in 1774 Elizabeth (Posey) the widow Huffman and moved from Virginia to South Carolina. They had a son--
Robert S. Adair, born c 1783, who married Martha Lafevre, daughter of Milliner (Key) Letcher Lefevre. (James Letcher married Milly Key, Jan. 6, 1771, in Amherst County, Va., with the consent of her father, Henry Key.)
(The Adairs and Keys were associated as early as William Adair's 1763 Augusta County will, when he named his daughter Sarah Keys).
Robert S. Adair and his sister Nancy who married Samuel Maloney, moved from Laurens, S. C., to Gwinnett County about 1818 and Robert and Samuel both enumerated there in 1820.
Some four years later, George R. Adair, whose son Isaac was born in Laurens in 1808, and who married Nancy, daughter of Samuel B. Farrow of Spartanburg County, S. C., moved to Gwinnett County.
During the 1840s, Isaac moved to Russell County, Ala., and later to Texas.
Robert's son William M. was killed at Gettysburg.
Nancy Adair of Laurens married 1817 Robert Craig, born 1794, who also moved to Gwinnett County. Nancy was born May 1, 1801 and died July 26, 1888.
Ruth Adair, apparently a widow, on Oct. 1, 1806, sold to Samuel Stewart 100 acres on the North Fork of Oconee River in Jackson County, where the family at that time intermarried with the McCords, the Williamses and the Oakses.
John and the widow Jane Adair were in Henry County, Ga., in 1827, and
John B. was in Madison County's lottery that year.
William M. left a will in Jackson County.

James Adair, born in Morgan County, Ga., in 1806, a successful merchant in Alabama for ten years, then a farmer of Talladega, Ala., until August 5,1845, when he died, leaving a widow and nine children---five sons and four daughters.
James was youngest of 11 children
