James Adair b. 16Jun1818 was my grgr grandfather and from what I have researched it appears he and at least 2 of his sons with Capt. John Cecil's Co were involved in a skirmish with Federal forces in Limestone Valley on 17Apr1864. John C. Adair b.26Jun1840 was wounded and somehow they got him to Gaither Mt. On 27Apr1864, James and my great grandfather Alfred N. Adair along with a Mr. Parker who had a horse were carrying supplies to John C. on top of Gaither Mt. Mr Parker stopped to water the horse while the other 2 continued. The "Feds" who were apparently following them came upon Parker and he mounted the horse and rode over the edge at a place later known as Parker Gap where the "Feds" thought he died. They continued and captured James, John and Alfred. The three were lined up on top of a bluff and shot, but Alfred fell as he ran away, was thought to
have been killed and thus escaped. Mrs. James Wasson, Mrs. Rainier and Mary L. Villines with a team of oxen cut their way thru the underbrush to the foot of the bluff and brought the 2 bodies out. They were buried in a common grave in what is now Gaither Cemetery. The grave is marked with a single, double faced stone.
