"AWAY DOWN HOME",by Maud Thomas, page 109, "Men of medicine have held an important place in the history of Robeson County. One of its earliest citizens was Dr. James Robert Adair, possibly the Robin Adair of ballad fame and certainly author of "HISTORY OF AMERICAN INDIANS", published in London in 1775. Buried near Rowland, this remarkable pioneer in medicine was recognized in 1934 by the Colonial Dames who placed a memorial marker near the spot believed to be his grave site." Marker in Rowland,NC marking burial place. Located on U.S. 301 at its junction with SR 71, Ashpole Cemetery, eastern side of Mitchell's Creek.
His home, called 'Fairfields", referred to in a document,1759, on north side of Great Contentnea Creek.

"Although W. C. Harllee devoted ninety-two pages of his three-volume work, KINFOLKS, published in New Orleans in 1934, to Dr. James Robert Adair and his descendents, he was unable to establish the identity of the wife of the Eighteenth Century Indian trader and author. The 1751 North Carolina Will of Elizabeth Allen of Johnston County, NC apparently not found by Harllee, gives a partial answer. It provides the clue that Mrs. Adair's given name was Clark. Land records show that the Allens and the Adairs were neighbors in the part of Johnston Co. that became Dobbs Co. in 1759 and is now Greene Co.,NC. James & Clark Adair were named as executors of Elizabeth Allen's Will, and witnessed it. It was made on 19 Sept. 1751, proved in the Johston Co. March court 1752, was recorded in the Sect. of the Provence's Will Book 7, pages 136 & 137, now in the N.C. Archives."
