MAYNOOTH - 11miles w. of Dublin. This place obtained its ancient celebrity from Fitzgerald, having been at a very early period one of the principal seats of the branch of the Fitzgerald family Kildare, of whom John Fitzgerald, 6th Earl of Kildare, erected a magnificent castle here in 1426. Thomas Fitzgerald, 7th Earl of Kildare m. Joan, dau. of Earl of Desmond. In 1484 Gerald, Earl of Kildare held a parliament in LIMERICK. ADARE town. A Franciscan abbey was founded by Thomas, 7th Earl of Kildare, who m. Joan dau. of the Earl of Desmond. Over the doorway are several shields with the arms of Kildare & Desmond. The ADAIR family, descends, it is stated, from Thomas, the 6th Earl of Desmond, who having gone on a hunting expedition, lost his way, and was benighted between Tralee and Newcastle, co. Limerick, where he was received and hospitably entertained by William McCORMICK, whose dau. he subsequently married. At this alliance his family and clan were much offended, and compelled him to fly to France, and resign his title and estates to his younger brother in 1418. He died of grief at Rouen (France) AD1420, the King of England attending his funeral. He had issue, Maurice FITZGERALD and John FITZGERALD (from 'Burke's Landed Gentry 1852 edition, Adair of Bellgrove). However, these entries in Burkes were put in by family and were not checked. It may not be entirely correct.
