Hello Josh,
I've recently been in contact with Bruce Cortright who suggeted I contact you about our Acton ancestors.
I am the greatgrandaughter of JOSEPH ACTON, champion wrestler in the late 1800s in both USA, England, and Ireland. I believe he was born around 1852-1854 somewhere in Lancashire, but can't nail it down for sure yet. His death certificate says he was born March 8, 1852 in England to Robert and Elizabeth Acton, both also born in England. However, documents suggest this may not be accurate - at least as far as the date of birth.
Joe was married to Elizabeth Rigby, born 1861-1862 to Thomas Rigby and Mary Bennett in England.Joe and Eliz had 6 children, 5 of which lived and are reported on censuses in the US. I also located the 1881 British Census info you mentioned to Bruce that puts a Joseph, Elizabeth, Ellen and Matthew ACTON at 26 Regent St, Wigan, Lancashire. Don't know yet if this is my Acton group.
Until reading Bruce's posts, I had no information on Joe Acton's siblings. At this point I am trying to document Joe's relationship to Matthew and any other Acton family members.I am learning that there are ALOT of Joseph Actons. All in the same areas of Lancashire, born about the same time, etc. etc.I have quite a bit of information after Joe came to the US, but little, if any, from before. Very hard to nail these folks down!
It appears you have done a lot of research on the Acton name. Does the above fit with any of your work?
Happy New Year!
Linda
