Acosta Family Genealogy Forum

I have searched most of this forum and many other sites regarding the history of the surname Acosta. There are a few explanations of their origin but of course there is only so far that you can go. The first is that Acosta was the name of a Visigoth King. The Visigoths were a germanic tribe but conquered and settled in Spain as well. Other explanations are that the name is derived from Romans who settled in Spain and that it is Sephardic, a word that was used to describe Jewish people in the Roman era. Although Harry Stein of Sephardim.com states that the name is Sephardic he does have a disclaimer that it does not mean that all with the name are Jewish. Obviously some were Jewish but converted to Catholicism between 1492 and 1497. From Spain the Acostas have seemed to have settled every where. There are connections to Portugual and the Canary Islands off Portugual. There are also connections to several latin countries. I also read at one site that an Acosta sailed with John Cabbot. Many people think the name Acosta means "of the coast" but this is incorrect. It's actual meaning is from an older Castilian Dialect. It actually means "rib". It you see any Coats of arms for the Acosta family, which there are many, almost all have ribs incorporated in them.
So my request is if anyone has any information regarding my Great great grandfather Julien Acosta please email it to me. TMy great grandfather was Olivan and my Grandfather was Lonia wwho settled in lower Lafourch Parish in LA. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Corey Acosta
