In searching the records on Land Grants in Texas resulting from participation in the Texas Revolution, I found two entries reporting warrants of land issued to Joseph S. A. Acklin "for his having served with Col. Fannin in 1836." A letter from him to the Commissioner of the Court of Claims in the Texas Land Office says that he "joined Captain Wyatt's Company at Huntsville, Alabama in November 1835." Ostensibly, this was done in order to come to Texas. If he served with Fannin in 1836, it had to be before the massacre at Goliad since he survived to receive a duplicate certificate (apparently in Alabama) in 1859.
On May 7, 1873 640 acres in Coryell County, TX, were patented to Arthur A. Acklin on Joseph's certificates.
I would like to know for sure whether Joseph S. A. Acklin was the son of Samuel Black Acklin and Elizabeth Hunt. If so, he would have been the brother of my great-great-grandmother, Sarah Vance Acklin, who was a daughter of Samuel and a wife of Charles Lewis McGehee, of Bastrop County, TX. Two brothers of Charles McGehee arrived in Bastrop County, Texas in 1834 and also participated in the Texas Revolution.
