I have some really sad news to pass on to my fellow Ackles researchers. My father-in-law, Kenneth Leo Ackels, passed away on July 6, 2001 and this is his obituary that I wrote. Haven't been able to do much of any genealogy research for about 2-3 years now (since the little one was born), but am very grateful for the data that I was able to find in regards to the Ackels / Ackles family. Couldn't have done it without your kind help. Ken loved the work I was doing with the Ackels clan and always wondered what little bit of information that I had found for the day.

Kenneth Leo Ackels passed away Friday, July 6, 2001 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 79 years. Ken was born in Hale, MI on January 26, 1922 to Claude Moses Ackels and Erma Meyer Ackels. He attended Fox Tech High School and graduated from Comstock High School in Comstock Park, MI in 1941. He served in the Navy World War II on the USS Mustin (DD-413) during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and also served on the USS Killen (DD-593) in the South Pacific. After the service, he moved to Grand Rapids, MI and worked for Rapistan conveying systems for 20 years. There, he met his wife, Betty Ann DeVos. They married on February 13, 1959 in Lamont, MI. The family moved to San Antonio in 1970 where Ken worked for DataPoint until his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Julie K. Timmer and husband Jim of Hudsonville, MI; one son, Gary Lee Ackels and wife Laurie of Helotes, TX and four grandsons, Christopher Trent Ackels and Brandon Phillip Golobish of Hudsonville, MI, and Sean Matthew Ackels and Dylan Edward Ackels of Helotes, TX. The family would like to thank Marty and April Sheppard and their children, Paige, Justin and Joey for all the Iove and joy they brought to Ken. He will be missed by his many friends in Texas, Michigan and Florida. Ken always said his greatest achievements were his good marriage, his two kids and his much loved grandsons. A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Hope Lutheran Church with Graveside Services following the Service at church at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:15 P.M. also on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hope Lutheran Church, Patio Cover Fund, 5714 Callaghan Road, San Antonio, TX 78228.
