Ackerman Family Genealogy Forum

For a number of years my sister (Janet Armstrong) and I have been looking for information about our g-g-g-g-g-grandfather, Cornelius Ackerman b. 1748, son of Johannis Ackerman. Lately our search has become more troublesome, as there seem to be two contemporary Cornelius Ackermans, both Loyalists, both from Bergen County. One settled in New Brunswick, Canada and lived to be 98; the other died in Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1783, leaving a wife Elizabeth and two small children. Cornelius, son of Johannis is said to have married Elizabeth Blauveldt circa 1772, but we think this is in error, and it is the Cornelius who died in Shelburne who was her husband. We have little documentary but some circumstantial evidence. In particular, one Abraham Van der Beek settled with Cornelius Ackerman in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1783, and was acknowledged to be his 'cousin'. The sister of Johannis Ackerman did in fact marry a Van der Beek, and had a son named Abraham. Also, after Cornelius Ackerman would have departed with his family for Shelburne in the spring of 1783, another Cornelius Ackerman was still submitting petitions for assistance in resettlement from New York. We are at a dead end for the present. Any new information would be welcome.
