Did the surname ACKERMAN become ACRES somewhere?

I recently stumbled on a website with updates & corrections to Savage's work about the First Settlers of New England. http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu

This provides the name ACRES, or ACKERMAN, HENRY, Newbury m HANAH d/o Thomas SILVER

Also JOHN, Boston, 1656, resid Muddy River, now Brookline, removed later to Dunstable. Married prob before 1664 to Desiretruth d/o Wm THORNE of Boston. Had 8 children, 6 bapt Boston, the last two born in Dunstable.

I am seeking the pedigree of JOHN WILLIAM ACRES b abt 1823 Boston. D 1888 Malden, MA. Married to Eliza Ann Bellamy in Boston abt 1842.

He may be a son of George T Acres & Hannah French.

Can anyone connect the Ackermans to the Acres?
I have been unsuccessful locating a pedigree of John William Acres to an immigrant ACRES.
