The (mis)SPELLING for the surname ACKERM

I see on this forum, that alot of you question the various spellings (or misspellings) of the name ACKERMAN.

According to the foreword entitled "The Ackerman Family in Europe" in the Barbara Tobey book, "The Ackerman Family", the Descs. of David Ackerman, 1662, it says:

" ..... The Dutch version is Akkerman, the Germanic spelling is Ackermann and the English of Akerman and Acerman. Of course, there have been many misspellings by the uneducated church voorleasers, tax collectors, army clerks, census takers, etc., who wrote it phonetically, plus the fact that even after English became established, many spoke Dutch in their home and churches, which gave their speech a heavy guttural accent."

***********************

and, as shown on the very first page, this list of ACKERMAN variations, spelled on old records:

Acerman
Accerman
Accreman
Accrman
Acker Man
Akerman
Akkerman
Aucerman
Auckerman
Aukerman
Occerman
Ockerman
Okerman
Oukkerman
