ACKER Age 75, of Index, (WA), and Seattle (WA), died peacefully at home on February 8, 2007, after a short battle with cancer. Bill was born on June 23, 1931 and grew up in Index, Washington, fishing and exploring along the North Fork of the Skykomish River. He graduated from Sultan (WA)High School. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, Bill attended the University of Washington, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Electrical Engineering. He worked as a research scientist at the Applied Physics Lab at the University of Washington for many years. In 1978, Bill founded BioSonics, Inc., a Seattle consulting, engineering and manufacturing firm that specializes in applying SONAR technology to monitor and assess aquatic biological resources. BioSonics was responsible for developing technology to monitor and improve juvenile salmon migration on the Columbia River. The company has employed over two hundred scientists, engineers, and support staff over its 29-year history and remains a leader in the industry today. Later in life, Bill became a professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington, where he was twice voted as professor of the year. Bill also served for many years as the MAYOR OF INDEX, WASHINGTON, reviving the town's historic Fourth of July celebration. He is survived by his wife, ANN HINKEN; his siter, JEAN MURRIL of Marysville, Washington, his daughter, LORI HEIBERG and her husband, TIM and their children ADAM and EMILY of Lincoln City, Oregon, his son, TIM ACKER and his wife, BEV, and their children, ALLY, KATY, TIM and JOSH of Arlington, Washington, and his son, ANDY ACKER of Honolulu, Hawaii.
