Hi Cousin Terria,
I was very glad to get your e-mail. What I know about Mary Elizabeth Achey is what I was told by my grandma Tonsie, and by cousin Babe. Mary was born abt. 1832. Her father's last name was Michaels. Her mother's name was Elizabeth Eichelburger or Ichelburger. What cousin Babe wrote was that the Michaels could have come from Germany or Austria, later settling in Holland. He might have been an Inn Keeper. He may have been a painter also. According to what Babe wrote, 1860-1861 Mary was in the Colorado Territory, lived in Nevadaville. 1862- Colorado Territory and Kansas. Phillip Achey was in the service. Made sketches of Ft. Larnet, Kansas and the Arkansas River. 1863-1864- Kansas city, Missouri. 1865-1867- lived in Colorado. 1867- Separated from Phillip. She blamed him for her daughter's death. 1880- moved to Washington, Johns River. Lived with son Clarence. 1881- Moved to the homestead on the Wishkah River. Painted in Chehalis area. 1883-Moved to Oregon, opened an art studio in Asteria. 1885- Married E. A. Woodruff and lived in Ft.Canby. Died at the homestead of an heart attack at the age of 53. She was buried on the banks of the Wishkah River At the homestead. I have some family letters about her that Grandma Tonsie and Cousin Babe wrote. I would be hapy to mail them to you. I should tell you how I fit in to this picture. Grandma Tonsie had 4 boys, Joe 1917, Bill 1921, John 1924, and David 1931. I'm the oldest daughter of David. My Dad told me that he remembers when Babe came and lived with his family. They were both young at the time.
