I research the Spurlock family from Goochland/Albemarle counties, Va. The following may help to tie some of these messages together. 26 Jan 1761 (recorded in Bedford County deed book A-1, page 322). Charles Spurlock, Joshua and Jesse Abston and Arden Evans witnessed a deed from Anne Chiles of Halifax County, Va to John Chiles of Albemarle for 100 acres in Bedford on the north side of the Staunton River, land devised to Obediah Woodson by patent 5 July `1751. A petition fot the Peak of Otters Presbyterian church dated 17 May 1774 had Jesse Abston as a signer. Francis Abston married Susannah Evans and left a will in 1762 Halifax County. Among his sons was Capt. Joshua Abstone who married Rachel Clement, daughter of Capt. Benjamin Clement who died in 1780, son of Capt. Benjamin who died in 1762. Benjamin , Jr. married Susanna Hill and moved to S.Car. The first tax list for Pittsylvania in 1767 (formed from Halifax in 1766() included Joshua Abston and Edmund Turner (taxed together)and separately John Abston (same list by Thomas Dillard). When one takes all these connected families - Clement, Dove, Chiles, Dillard, Thurman - one is speaking of an area in northwest Pittsylvania County and southern Bedford county, on both sides of the Staunton (Roanoke) River. Part of this area is now under the Lee Reservoir. Charles Spurlock lived near Smith Mountain but I have never been able to deterime which county he lived in. The area probably became part of Franklin County, created in 1785. Charles witnessed the will of Timothy Dalton in ca 1771 in Bedford. Daltons was also connected to Dove, Thurman, Clements. I hope this helps someone. - Ken Notify Administrator about this message?
